It is a very common misconception that chiropractors only treat the spine. This is not true as the entire musculoskeletal system can be treated by chiropractors.
So if you have foot, ankle, knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, wrist or hand pain you can be treated by a chiropractor! People of all ages can be treated by a chiropractor. The chiropractor will adjust his/her strength according to each patient's age and condition.
The word 'chiropractic' is derived from the Greek words 'cheiros' (hand) and 'praktos' (done by) and so it essentially means 'done by hand.' Chiropractic focuses on the 'chiropractic manipulation/adjustment' in which joints are effectively altered by hand from being in an incorrect position (called a joint subluxation - this causes pain and dysfunction) to the correct anatomical postion (relieving pain and dysfunction). The chiropractic manipulation is mostly painless. Though this is the primary focus of the profession, many chiropractors incorporate additional methods of treatment such as soft tissue therapy, dry needling, ultrasound, spinal traction, etc.
Chiropractors may work in conjunction with other professionals such as biokineticists, orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, etc. They are primary care doctors and so they may write referrals to other healthcare professionals and hospital.
Dr Kinsman will ask you about your medical history. If you have had any previous diagnostic and imaging tests performed on you such as radiographs, CT, MRI and ultrasound imaging it would be helpful to bring these with to your appointment so that he can look at them and discuss them with you. He will perform diagnostic tests where necessary; according to your case history e.g. blood pressure, neurological tests, orthopaedic tests, EMG (electromyography) testing, etc. He will then tailor his treatment plan according to your condition. He may send you for additional imaging tests. If he concludes that your condition cannot be treated with chiropractic, he will refer you to the appropriate healthcare professional.
He makes use of the following treatment methods:
